Growing older should never mean waiting for help.

Standing up, walking to the kitchen, calling someone you love. For millions of older people, each of these gets harder every year, and the help comes late.

Knee pain grows with the years.

In one large American study, 56.6% of adults aged 75 and over said their knees hurt, ached or felt stiff on most days.

Most people stop asking for help.

In a UK survey, 53% of adults over 50 with severe knee pain or disability had not seen their doctor about it in a year. Many said it was just their age.

The money arrives at the end.

In a Medicare sample of people with knee osteoarthritis, joint replacement took 51% of the spending. Only 12.9% of them had one.

And fewer hands to help.

In 2010 there were 7.2 Americans aged 45 to 64 for every American aged 80 and over. On 2013 projections, there will be 2.9 by 2050.

How it comes apart.

Every part has a job, and every part is made to be put on seated, with stiff fingers, without help.

Three pieces. Connected.

The exo helps you move, the companion keeps help within reach, and one dock charges both while the house sleeps.

Veema Exo

Powered joints at the hips and knees, carbon struts and soft knit cuffs. If you stop, the motors go free.

The voice companion: a white rounded square with an amber ring and a red SOS button

Voice companion

Calls, questions and reminders by voice, and an SOS button found by touch. It has its own battery.

Nightstand dock

Charges the battery and the companion overnight, with a soft amber light.

You cannot be there for every stand.

Most people who look at Veema are looking for a parent. It is built so they can do more alone, and reach you the moment they want to.

An alarm only helps if it is worn and within reach. In one study of people over 90, it was used in only one in five falls where someone could not get up alone. So the companion lives on the exo, which is worn all day. Why alarms go unused

  • Calls by voice, from any room.“Call Maria” works from the kitchen, the hallway or the bathroom.
  • An SOS button found by touch.Ringed in red at the bottom of the companion.
  • One dock for everything. The battery and the companion charge side by side.

How it works

Sensors in the belt and joints read how you are moving and add strength at the moment you need it, and only then.

Modes

Veema changes mode on its own as you move. For the rest, just ask.

Hip only, or hip and knee.

The knee modules slide off at the quick release. Wear the hips for walking around the house, and add the knees when stairs and chairs are the hard part.
